What Is a Massage Tip?

A massage tip is a gratuity you give your massage therapist after a session to show appreciation for their skill, effort, and care. Massage therapists perform physically demanding work — applying pressure, manipulating muscles, and standing for extended periods. At spas, tips are expected and factored into therapists' compensation. At medical or clinical settings, tipping is less common but still appreciated.

How Much Do You Tip a Massage Therapist?

Tip your massage therapist 15–20% of the session cost. Most spa-goers tip 20%, which has become the de facto standard for massage services. Here is a breakdown based on setting and session quality:

💡 Massage Tip Example — $120 Spa Massage
  1. Your 60-minute spa massage costs $120.00
  2. 15% tip$120 × 0.15 = $18.00
  3. 20% tip$120 × 0.20 = $24.00
  4. 25% tip$120 × 0.25 = $30.00

Spa vs Clinic — Tipping Differences

🧖 Spa Setting

Tip: 18–20% always. Spa therapists earn a base wage with the expectation that tips will supplement their income. This is the most common massage setting and tipping is firmly expected.

🏥 Clinical / Medical Setting

Tip: Optional, $5–10. If the massage therapist operates in a doctor's office, chiropractic practice, or physical therapy clinic, tipping is not expected but is appreciated.

🏨 Hotel / Resort Spa

Tip: 18–20%. Check the spa bill — some resorts auto-add an 18–20% gratuity. If it's already included, you don't need to tip again.

🏠 In-Home (Zeel, Soothe)

Tip: 18–20%+. Mobile therapists bring their own equipment and travel to your location. Tip at least 18% to account for their travel time and effort.

Massage Tip Etiquette

✅ Tip in Cash

Cash goes directly to the therapist. Place it in an envelope or hand it personally after your session. Many spas provide tip envelopes at the front desk.

✅ Tip on the Full Price (Not Discounts)

If you used a Groupon, gift card, or membership discount, tip on the original session price — not the discounted amount. The therapist did the same work.

❌ Don't Tip the Spa Owner

If the massage therapist owns the practice, tipping is optional. They set their own prices and keep all revenue. A thank-you note or online review is equally valued.

❌ Don't Forget Multi-Service Visits

If your spa day includes massage, facial, and body wrap, tip each therapist separately based on their individual service cost — not on the package total.

Massage Questions

Massage Tipping FAQ

Everything you need to know about tipping massage therapists at spas and clinics.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

15–20% of the session cost. 20% is the standard at most spas. For a $100 massage, that's $15–$20. Cash tips are preferred.

Do you tip for a medical massage?

Optional — $5–10 or 10%. Medical massage is a healthcare service, so tipping isn't expected. A small gesture is appreciated if the therapist is not the practice owner.

How much to tip for a couples massage?

Each person tips their own therapist 15–20%. For a $300 couples massage, each person tips $22.50–$30 to their respective massage therapist.

Should I tip more for a longer session?

The percentage stays the same (15–20%). Longer sessions cost more, so the dollar amount of the tip increases proportionally. A 90-minute $150 session at 20% = $30 tip.

Is it better to tip in cash or on card?

Cash is preferred. Cash tips go directly to the therapist immediately. Some spas take a percentage of credit card tips or delay payment to therapists.

Do I tip if I used a Groupon or discount?

Yes — tip on the original (pre-discount) price. The therapist performed the same work regardless of your discount. Tipping on the discounted price shortchanges them.

Is gratuity included at hotel spas?

Sometimes. Some resort and hotel spas auto-add 18–20% gratuity. Check your spa bill before adding extra. If it's included, no additional tip is necessary.

Is this massage tip calculator free?

Yes, 100% free with no ads. Works on any device. Calculate your massage tip from your phone right at the spa.
